Please meet Jacquelyn Delgado (Phoenix '15), the new 6th grade math teacher at South Elementary School in Newark. She returns to New Jersey having taught 5th grade math in Phoenix for the last three years. Get to know more about her and her passion for education and her students.
Where did you grow up?
I grew up in Metuchen, NJ and then went to Rowan University in South Jersey to study Mathematics and Education.
Where do you call home now?
I moved to Phoenix, AZ in 2015 when I was accepted into the Corps but moved back home this July to Metuchen, NJ to be closer to my family.
What is a song or movie that defined the time when you did the corps?
I think a song that defined the time that I did the Corps is “Feeling Hot Hot Hot” by The Merrymen because..... Phoenix, Arizona.
What is the name of as student that changed your life?
One of my students that really left an impression on me and my teaching experience during my first year of teaching was named Isaac. The immense potential and brilliance that he brought into my math classroom was inspiring.
What is the biggest lesson you learned from teaching?
The biggest lesson I learned from teaching was the importance of building relationships. It is not only crucial to build relationships with your students and their families, but it is equally as important to build relationships with your school staff and community advocates as well.
Why does NJ rock?
I love NJ because it’s my home and where I’ve grown up. #njallday
What do you do now?
I’ll be teaching 6th Grade Math at South Street Elementary School in the Newark Public Schools District this school year.
What do you value most about being a part of TFA?
What I value most about being apart of TFA is the sense of community it brings. I am proud to be a part of an organization of inspiring individuals working together to reach educational equity.
What do you think is the most important issue in education today?
One of the most important issues in education today is the need for diversity of voice and representation among those that make decisions for education.
